Refunds and chargebacks for digital products
Who handles a dispute and who pays for it can be different.
Separate a refund from a dispute
A refund is a repayment through the payment workflow. A chargeback is a dispute through the card system with its own deadlines and charges. A pre-dispute alert can also produce costs or preventive refunds.
Follow the balance deduction
Check whether the transaction amount, original processing fee, platform fee and dispute charge are returned or retained. A won dispute does not necessarily restore every fee.
Understand the MoR’s authority
An MoR may choose to refund to avoid a dispute, even if your own policy is narrower. Confirm evidence deadlines, who can submit evidence and thresholds that trigger review. Keep terms, delivery and support records.
