FX fees and international-card fees are different costs

Separate buyer currency, card country and settlement currency, then model the extra cost of international sales.

FX fees and international-card fees are different costs

Write down three different variables

“International payment” is too broad to be a useful fee assumption. Record the country where the card was issued, the currency in which the customer is charged, and the currency paid into your bank or provider balance. A provider may price these attributes separately. The buyer’s address alone does not tell you whether currency conversion occurs.

The FX & cross-border fee calculator keeps conversion markup and international-card surcharges separate. Its inputs are sales shares, not a list of countries. That makes the scenario reusable across providers with different contractual definitions. Confirm the actual definition of “international” in each quote.

The two groups can overlap

Imagine a business reporting 10,000 in monthly sales. Forty percent, or 4,000, requires conversion into its settlement currency. At an illustrative 2% conversion markup, that costs 80. Separately, 30% of sales, or 3,000, is subject to an illustrative 1.5% international-card surcharge, costing 45. The combined additional cost is 125, or 1.25% of gross sales.

Some of those sales can belong to both groups. Do not force the shares to add up to 100%. Do not charge both extra rates against every sale unless your actual sales mix and agreement justify doing so. The example does not compound one fee onto the other and excludes the ordinary processing fee.

Presentment is different from settlement

Stripe’s currency documentation distinguishes the currency charged to the buyer from settlement and bank-account currency. A localized checkout can therefore be useful without guaranteeing cheaper settlement. Keeping a supported currency balance may avoid one conversion step, but the account, bank route and pricing conditions still need to match.

Also separate provider conversion from a buyer’s issuing-bank conversion. A customer can incur a bank fee that never appears in your provider payout report. Avoid promising “no FX cost” simply because your own processing statement has no conversion line. Inspect the complete payment journey.

Ask for a comparable quote

Request the percentage, the fee base, any fixed charge and the reference exchange-rate policy. Ask whether conversion cost appears as a separate charge or inside the applied exchange rate. Record which currencies can be held and settled directly, minimum payout amounts and withdrawal charges. A provider’s headline number may describe a different country or product from yours.

Use Stripe’s profile as one research starting point, then compare alternatives in the directory. Transfer only verified fee components into the break-even calculator; do not combine a domestic processor quote with an international MoR quote and call the difference a saving.

Recalculate when the sales mix changes

A quote that suits a mostly domestic launch may become expensive after international growth. Export several months of sales, group the volume by actual fee trigger and recalculate. Use transaction value to weight the shares: 30% of customers is not necessarily 30% of revenue. Compare currencies and card regions alongside your average transaction amount.

Keep ordinary processing costs in the payment fee calculator and extra international costs in the FX scenario. Save both URLs and the provider quote date. The calculator does not fetch live exchange rates or forecast future currency movements; it shows how today’s stated fee structure behaves under your chosen mix.
