Compare percentage, fixed and subscription charges with a worked payment-provider break-even example.

## Make the quotes cover the same job

A provider with a monthly charge and a lower transaction fee can become cheaper as sales grow. The crossover depends on average order value, fixed fees and monthly costs. It also depends on whether the two products do the same work. A processor handling card acceptance and an MoR handling a supported sale are different service bundles.

Shortlist products in the [payment provider directory](https://www.paymentsrank.com/), inspect country eligibility, and use the [break-even calculator](https://www.paymentsrank.com/tools/provider-break-even-calculator/) with your own written quotes. The editable defaults are hypothetical examples. They are not advertised tariffs for named providers.

## A worked example: 29 per transaction

Suppose Quote A has no monthly charge and costs 2.9% plus 0.30. Quote B costs 49 per month and 2.5% plus 0.20. At a 29 ticket, this calculator rounds the percentage part per transaction: A becomes 1.14 and B becomes 0.93. Quote B saves 0.21 per sale but must first recover its 49 monthly charge.

Put the numbers to workUse the [provider fee calculator](https://www.paymentsrank.com/tools/fee-calculator/), [payment provider break-even calculator](https://www.paymentsrank.com/tools/provider-break-even-calculator/) and [fx & cross-border fee calculator](https://www.paymentsrank.com/tools/fx-fee-calculator/) for your scenario. Then compare eligible products in the [payment provider directory](https://www.paymentsrank.com/).

| Monthly transactions | Quote A | Quote B | Lower cost |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 100 | 114.00 | 142.00 | A by 28.00 |
| 234 | 266.76 | 266.62 | B by 0.14 |
| 1,000 | 1,140.00 | 979.00 | B by 161.00 |

The lines cross at about 233.33 transactions. From 234 whole transactions per month, Quote B is cheaper in this model. At zero transactions A costs nothing and B still costs 49. The decision can reverse when your ticket size or plan charges change, so test a quiet month as well as a growth month.

## Why rounding can move the crossover

At a 29 ticket, 2.9% is 0.841 before rounding. Real settlement systems may round at a particular stage, use currency-specific precision or apply charges to tax-inclusive amounts. The calculator uses two-decimal amounts and rounds each percentage charge to the cent before adding the fixed fee. This makes the calculator’s rounding method reproducible.

If your sales span several price points, run the calculation for each meaningful band or reconcile against a transaction export. A single average ticket can hide how fixed charges affect your cheapest plan. Currency selection here relabels one reporting currency and does not perform an exchange conversion.

## The charges that can change the answer

Add subscription software, tax tooling, FX, disputes, refunds and payout costs when they apply. [Paddle](https://www.paymentsrank.com/gateway/paddle/)’s published pay-as-you-go price bundles a wider supported service scope than basic processing; [its profile](https://www.paymentsrank.com/gateway/paddle/) explains the model. [Lemon Squeezy](https://www.paymentsrank.com/gateway/lemonsqueezy/) documents additional fee triggers, so its headline alone is insufficient for some sales mixes.

Use the [FX calculator](https://www.paymentsrank.com/tools/fx-fee-calculator/) for conversion and international-card extras. Use the [dispute cost calculator](https://www.paymentsrank.com/tools/chargeback-cost-calculator/) to test expected lost sales and fees. Avoid adding a cost twice when it is already included in a quoted bundle.

## Choose with a range, not one optimistic month

Compare low, expected and high transaction volumes. Record both the monthly difference and the responsibilities each product leaves with your team. A small arithmetic saving may not justify migration work, an unsupported country, a missing payment method or a contract that does not fit your product. Check subscription export and cancellation behavior before moving a live customer base.

For documented provider scenarios, open the [payment fee calculator](https://www.paymentsrank.com/tools/fee-calculator/). Keep the custom comparison beside the actual quote and its scope. If one provider has both a lower monthly charge and lower per-sale cost, there is no positive-volume crossover in this simple model; the lower-cost line stays lower.
